Workshop testing for Tuned Mass Dampers for Kobe Steel Chimney was completed at TESolution structural lab in Korea and they were safely packed for shipping on the first week of May. Kobe Steel Chimney is located in Kakogawa, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. It is a very slender and flexible structure so its structural stability is often determined by wind load rather than earthquake load.
In particular, in this type of structure, the structure system is often determined by the vibration in across wind direction rather than the vibration in along wind direction, In order to avoid potential risk of vortex induced vibration and aerodynamic instability within the designed wind speed range 4 sets of 0.76ton TMD were designed to be installed at the top (90m) of the structure where the maximum deformation is expected.
