The A25 Fubon Tower in Taiwan is a 54-story office building with a height of 256 meters, making it particularly susceptible to wind-induced vibrations due to its considerable height. Wind tunnel testing revealed that improvements in building serviceability were necessary, leading to the decision to install a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) system.
The initial conceptual design phase of the TMD aimed to control accelerations induced by wind loads with a return period of one year. However, during the detailed design stage, additional criteria were introduced requiring the TMD system to remain safe and effective under wind loads with a 50-year return period and seismic loads with a 475-year return period.
To ensure displacement remains within allowable limits under such extreme conditions, a nonlinear damper was adopted. Our company installed a pendulum-type TMD equipped with this nonlinear damping mechanism, with a moving mass reaching 500 tons.
This marks our largest-ever moving mass application. Following the installation, a performance verification test was conducted on-site in the presence of stakeholders, and the results confirmed excellent vibration control performance.
