The Halogaland Bridge, spanning 1,533 meters with a main span of 1,145 meters, was the longest suspension bridge within the Arctic Circle at the time of its construction and it still remains one of the longest in the region. Due to its considerable length, the bridge exhibits low natural damping and high structural flexibility, rendering it particularly susceptible to wind-induced vibrations.
To mitigate these effects, stockbridge (SB) dampers were employed, which are among the most effective devices for controlling wind-induced vibrations in hanger cables. Three variants of SB dampers are available from TES: high-frequency, low-frequency, and hybrid types. Wind-induced vibration analysis revealed the presence of Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) in the hanger cables. Among the three damper types, the SB damper was the most efficacious for the Halogaland Bridge and its conditions. For optimal vibration control, two dampers were installed on each cable of the bridge. |
